Parents’ Association Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 6:30 PM
Principal’s Report
State of the School
We are a small school and therefore we have a smaller budget. The trade off to more intimacy
is less resources.
Out of classroom teachers – We are funded for two fulltime prep teachers (art and drama)
based on teachers and student numbers. Bigger schools get more. Eric is our ESL teacher and
his salary is based on how many ESL learners we have, we supplement the rest. Marian is an
extra teacher who does academic intervention. A lot of money is spent on our staff. The Title 1
ARA (American Recovery Act) funds were given to save teacher jobs.
Guidance Counselor – Last year we were only funded for a guidance counselor for 1 day a
week, we paid for the extra hours. This year the counselor works 1 day and does all his
services the 1 day.
Paraprofessionals – Two funded through disability act some thing are changing but don’t what
the changes are yet. Had to pay for third because of how the student’s Individualized Education
Plan (IEP) was written. We fund two ourselves. We choose to spend money on 5 paras;
hopefully we will not have to excess them next year.
Aides – We have 4 and they primarily do lunch, it is a real skeleton crew, minimum hours get
paid about $17-18 an hour.
Still moving forward with Technology Goal. Saved Professional Development money by staying
in-house and using per session.
Money we received in July was based on projected student enrollment, since we are down 30
kids we had to return $26000. Camille likes to underestimate the projected enrollment because
then if we over enroll we can get money later in the year. In the past able to roll over Money but
had to pay a lot of July bills with last years extra money.
In terms of teacher layoffs we will not be compromised though worry about 3 new hires and
Maggie is still untenured
There is a Social worker and Psychologist in-house that we share with Amistad that we can tap into.
PA Report
Nutrition Workshop
Today kicked off the 8-week workshop. If you attend minimum of 6 sessions you get a
certificate of completion. Any parent can attend.
Parents as Partners Arts Education Grant
We received a $2800 grant for 12 4th grade families to introduce the importance of arts in their
children’s education. Our art teacher Maggie, Sasha Schwartz and Bread and Yoga are
instrumental in introducing the families to intro to clay, sculpting and bread making. A K parent,
Ameer Parsa, who works at MoMA, will arrange for tour of parents of 4th graders and then they
can revisit with child. Program will take place after school and weekends. Karina Madera will
help with recruiting and a lottery will be held.
Fly by Night Dance
Seeking alternative funding via indiegogo.com for an after school dance program targeted to
specific group of 1s and 2s via lottery. Last year did K and 1 but hard on Ks (too tired). They do
modern approach to dance using shapes. At $803 need $1000.
Title 1 Parent Involvement Funds
Subcommittee comprised of Executive PA board want to use funds for services that will allow
parents to participate in meetings and workshops. Allocated $450 to CUNY in the Heights for
PA evening meetings and Nutrition Workshops and $150 for Spanish Translation at next few PA
meetings.
PA Meeting “Teasers”
Will have some guest speakers/informative groups prior to meetings
February morning meeting we will have Jane Berkowitz from Kaplan offering a testing tip
workshop, Camille will order booklets, Kaplan keys book. It is ok to attend even if kid is not at
that grade level, can learn the lingo.
March evening meeting will have a mini camp fair from 5:30-6:30 before 6:30 meeting.
Organizations invited include NYC Parks & Rec, Y. If you have any connections let Margaret
Peeler know.
Parent Workshops
Looking into having a Progressive Education Workshop in late spring. How does Math/Literacy
look in Progressive Education? What does 2/3 loop look like? Would like a Saturday summit
with a couple of different topics? Idea would be to have the morning session be open to current
and prospective parents and the afternoon for current families.
Spring Cocktail Auction Fundraiser
Amanda Bastian and Catrarina Quiroz will be meeting tomorrow at 6:30 PM at Bread and Yoga.
Amanda will set up google docs to coordinate information gathered.
501(c)3 research
Two years ago we had a law firm that was willing to help us, we have a lot of paperwork. Need
to find out if a separate executive Board needs to be created. We definitely need a
lawyer/paralegal to file and accountant for books.
Music and Music Integration
Formed a committee with parents with strong music backgrounds and teachers to think of ways
of implementing a more formal/structured music program.
School Aides
Parent voiced concern that in older grades there is too much screaming at kids.
5th grade Moving on Ceremony
33 kids will be moving on, budget for all expenses (Ceremony, Clearpool Trip, T-Shirts,
Memorybook, etc) is $12000. Administration will cover a 1/3, Senior dues a 1/3 and PA a 1/3
(1/2 from current funds & 5th grade parents with PA support will fundraise for 1/2)
Motion to Donate $2000 to 5th grade passed.
Healthy Snack/Birthday Policy
SLT is discussing best way to implement and enforce a Healthy Snack Policy. More
disagreement around an actual Birthday Policy.
Meeting Adjourned

85 forms returned
Which of the following would encourage you to attend PA meetings?
More Convenient Time 38% Other:
Child Care 31% 5 prefer evenings (1 after 6:30, 1 after 7 PM)
Parent Workshop 20% 4 are OK with current time
Spanish Translation 12% 1 preferred AM
Guest Speaker 8% 1 wrote Wed AM is hard – conflicts with Town Mtg
Food & Refreshments/Coffee 7% 1 wrote More diversity among PTA leadership
Meetings this year will be held Wednesdays alternating between mornings and evenings.
Wednesday at 6:30 PM 52% Comments:
Wednesday at 8:40 AM 22% 3 would prefer meetings start before 6:30 PM
Neither convenient 12% 2 would prefer a Monday
Both convenient 9% 1 would prefer after 7
1 would prefer 8 AM
Any morning except Wed (conflicts with town meeting)
How do you most often get information regarding the PA and its activities?
Email – 74% Family Folder – 62% Website – 5%
What areas of your childʼs education at Muscota are of greatest concern to you (aside from the core
subject areas of Literacy and Writing – 73%, Math – 60 % and Science and Social Studies – 24%)?
Arts Enrichment 33%
Physical Exercise (not Recess) 22%
Test taking skills and preparation 21%
Social Development (bullying, self-esteem) 20% (1 respondent specified bullying; another wrote on the bus)
Computer Skills/Technology 19%
Transitioning to Middle School 14%
EHS (air quality, cleanliness, pest control) 12%
Quality of Recess 8% (1 respondent mentioned supervision)
Nutrition: School Food and Snacks 8% (1 mentioned time allotted for lunch)
English Language Learners (ELL) Support 7%
Servicing Special Needs (SETSS) 2%
Explain or list others:
• We should deepen and expand art and sports and not think of them as “enrichment” but disciplines
• Free after school programs
• General music curriculum (lack of)
• I feel that there isn’t enough social studies and science or test preparation. I also feel that writing needs to
be more focus on strategies/skill to become better writers
• I listed the 3 things in which Muscota seems to be “weaker”.
• I want my child to receive a quality education in a nurturing environment
• I want to be sure he is excelling and prepared competitively to get into MS/HS
• Literacy and Math are obvious necessary foundations, but children also need ample unstructured and
structured physical activity. Why donʼt they have P.E?
• Middle schools require students to know keyboarding, using the Internet to research. Our students are at a
disadvantage when they go to 6th grade because of our limited exposure
• Only a little inquiry of how these are integrated on the daily K schedule
• Science would be my #4, I love the animals and insects in the classroom
• Selection is based on areas that our family feels is weakest – in terms of our child
• I am really concerned about the new standards and how Muscota will be helping my child meet them
• Writing is such an important life skill. Art builds self esteem and courage and test taking is the reality of public
school accountability
• Want to make sure my son is up to standards as a 1st grader in comparison to other schools. Also more
trips to enhance learning from classroom
• A lot of boys have been bullying my daughter lately at recess. I wish there were more stretching and
exercising in the class like yoga.
• These are the foundations for higher learning and thus more/better able to acquire knowledge
• Preserving and building a sense of community, striking balance between time spent on assessments and
time spent fostering self-expression and individual growth and learning style.
• I feel these things are harder for parents to help their children with (arts enrichment, test taking skills,
transitioning to middle school)
What programs or areas should money raised by the PA support?
School enrichment programs 72%
Music 49 (1 specified instrument) Other: foreign language 2
Dance 38 robotics 1
Physical Education 19 cooking 1
Chess 17 arts 1
Knitting 4 any-all 1
Teacher and classroom support 53%
Field trips like Clearpool 15%
Parent Support Workshops 9%
School food and wellness improvements 8% (reducing noise in lunchroom)
Other:
After school programs (free) other schools have them
Underwrite the salary of a trained (MLS) librarian
School trips to museums, galleries, concerts, etc.
Which of the following parent workshops would you most likely attend?
Curriculum (literacy, math, social studies, science) 56%
Middle School Preparation 44%
Progressive Education at Muscota 40%
Homework Help 6%
Other:
Concerned more SS & Science are necessary
Discipline
Helping children with social development challenges (excluding, etc)
Workshops that can be more accessible
How to best support your child’s learning at home
Would love to have teachers involved in these workshops (curriculum & progressive education)
Activities or Events you would like to see the PA conduct in the future
Fundraiser
• 3 Spring Auction/Fundraiser
• I think it would be a great idea for the PA to conduct an event involving our children’s pets. It’ll be a great
fundraiser
• Perhaps a neighborhood 5K run fundraiser since there is already an alliance w NYRR via the Mighty Milers
Program; it would be a great spring event and would promote wellness and fitness
• Maybe fundraising chocolates for sale for school profit. I also would like to see maybe something for the
holidays
• Movie night
• Network with more companies. You can search for many companies that are willing to make private
contributions to schools
Movement
• 3 dance (one specified Ballet)
• more PE classes or other recreational activity
• I would like to suggest swimming lessons to the Muscota students. Swimming is not only a fun activity but
also a like skill.
• more athletic activities, running, soccer, baseball, basketball, dance, yoga, etc.
Family
• family field trips,
• children concert, dance (disco)
• gather parents from all countries and create a peaceful and harmonious union
• International Day/Night
• More community building (like Madhatters & Skraptacular). Perhaps an annual Spring Event? Scholastic
Book Event? (they always seem to be cancelled)
• more workshops, involve more community service
• Organized competition amongst the children (perhaps in math)
• I would like you to continue the sharing between parents and children like the lunch today 11-17-10 was
something that we all enjoyed.
Communication
• I would like to know what activities the PA conducts in general What is the purpose
• Information about what SLT is/does.
• I might be missing it, but I would like to see the minutes of the PA meetings posted somewhere on the
website. If I cannot go, then I’d like to hear what happened.
Workshops
• Spanish workshop so parent who do not speak English become more involve in PTA activities. To feel
welcome.
• Programs & engagement with museums and parks. Learning about various middle school options
• Invite speakers on progressive education, invite alumni to reflect on how Muscota prepared them, etc.
Administrative
• more communication with teachers and their goals
• Looking at the progress on Reading, Math and Science and also student’s safety
• I would like to see the most energy going to enriching the curriculum and to reducing class size
• Parents to be able to discuss the main problem with the children in the classroom
• more trips (educational)
• Engage parents with talents etc. for enrichment programs.
• 3 are okay with current activities
What can the PA do to serve its families better?
Listserves/Contact Lists
• A listserve for proven babysitters – parents who can help in a pinch – that would be great
• Need class lists contact sheet, do not have it
Inclusion
• Be more welcoming and open to new families, who have younger students I have attended all but one
meeting and always felt as though the return parents controlled.
• Being thoughtful not to exclude families, they may shy away from events due to financial hardship or
language.
• This is a recession, many families can’t afford to do much. Look for other venues that don’t always
include asking parents for money
• Find ways to integrate more Spanish & other cultural programs and events
Communication
• Communication with parents and teachers. Also of the educational activities in school to the families.
• Emailing minutes of the PA meetings might generate more attendance because it would bring more
awareness to the parents re: issues/highlights discussed at the meetings
• Give a good briefing of exactly what is the “who, what, when, where and how” of the PTA
• Keep us informed as to changes – particularly in terms of budget cuts and mobilizing us to provide best
academic and social environment for the kids as possible.
• Send meeting minutes through email so we are all kept in loop
Administrative
• Teachers who only speak English be given a course in Spanish so they can communicate with those of
other countries.
• Have more evening meetings maybe Coffee with Camille
Other
• Create a Monday through Friday after school program to help with homework
• Bringing in/incorporating swimming lessons, music lessons, etc would I believe benefit our children.
• Less meetings and more practical activities.
• PA is doing well, but could get parents involved in classes instead of recess – supervision and fundraising
- we are here for our children not just the school.
• Supporting my son who is shy, it is hard for him to communicate with others
• 12 are okay as is
• 2 are not sure

Margaret Peeler calls meeting to order at 8:50AM.

President’s Report

• PA Survey Results: Thank you to all who returned the PA survey. We got a lot of good feedback and suggestions. Some suggestions that we are implementing are: posting meeting minutes on the Muscota website (www.muscota.org), moving meeting days from Wednesday to Tuesdays so they do not conflict with Town Meeting, and providing childcare at evening PA meetings. Parents are welcome to send additional feedback by emailing pres@muscota.org.
• Parent Advocacy Training: A flyer was sent home notifying parents of a free, 10-week Parent Advocacy Training program being offered by Josh Karan, a founding Muscota parent and former Community Education Council (CEC) member. The aim of the workshop will be to help educate parents to becoming better, and more effective organizers within their schools and advocate for change in all district 6 public schools. The workshop is open to any interested parent with children in a district 6 public school.
• Admissions: We continue to host tours for prospective parents every Friday morning. Tours for incoming Ks and 1st Graders will be held through March 4 which is also the application deadline. Two more tours have been added to the schedule to ensure we get the as many families in the door as possible. The lottery will be on March 14. In the past, Muscota’s lottery has separated applications by gender and race in order that our incoming class reflects our community’s diverse make up. New interpretation of DoE regulations say that we must conduct a ‘blind’ lottery this year. There is a concern among some members of the Admissions committee that our lottery results will lack diversity because our tour attendees to date, have been predominantly white (non-Hispanic) families. Camille stated at the meeting that she is committed to having a diverse population come September 2011. Camille will continue to require her staff to present regulations concerning admissions and do her best within the regulations to have a diverse population come September.
Please note: It was incorrectly stated at the meeting that race and gender data were not being collected on the current application. This information has been collected to date and will continue to be collected which will help us determine if the lottery results are well balanced.
• Legacy: Muscota currently honors a sibling policy of admitting younger siblings of current Muscota students. Over the years, we have also honored admission of siblings of Muscota graduates. There is typically not more than 1 to 3 of these cases a year. Returning families have demonstrated strong ties to our school and their child’s experience at Muscota and they want to give their younger child a similar Muscotaexperience. Motion proposed by Margaret Peeler: The members of the Parent Association support a policy of extending the sibling policy to include siblings of Muscota graduates. Motion seconded by Cathy Cabrera-Figueroa. Motion passed unanimously to support extending the sibling policy to include siblings of Muscota graduates.

Principal’s Report

• Healthy Snacks in the Classroom: Snacks served in the classroom are often void of nutritional value and is contrary to the PA’s wellness initiatives. The practice of celebrating birthdays in the classroom also leads to an inordinate amount of sweets and candy during the day. One parent suggests doing a monthly celebration to lessen the amount of sugary snacks the children are eating. Children’s birthdays are also already recognized at Town Meeting by month. Another parent suggested that this subject be dealt with by the SLT (as any school-wide policy change must be discussed and implemented by the SLT). Camille urges parents to take a look at what is being served as snacks in the classroom and let your teacher know if you are concerned. The Healthy Snack guidelines will also be sent home again to remind families of what types of snack are acceptable.
• Cold Weather Policy: is here, and this year, the wind chill factor will be the bottom line in deciding whether or not the children go out. If ice and snow are on the ground, as per the DoE, the children are not permitted outside. Camille and teachers would like the children out as much as possible. Please make sure your child is dressed to go out in the cold weather. Gloves, hat, scarves, warm boots. The kids love being outdoors, even in the deep cold weather!
• Phone Messenger System: The automated phone message system is being looked at again and will hopefully be back in service soon. Many parents expressed their satisfaction with the phone system as a form of effective communication in prior years, so efforts to revive it are on the ‘to-do’ list.
• School Budget: The budget is on the agenda for today’s (Wednesday, December 15, 2010) SLT meeting. Camille will be reporting on budget issues at the next PA meeting in January.

Health and Safety Report by Katie Soares

• Free Nutrition Workshop for Parents: Cornell Cooperative Extension will be offering a free 8-week seminar focusing on nutrition. Upon completion of at least 6 sessions, participants will receive a certificate from Cornell. The classes are open to all Muscota parents/caregivers and will be done simultaneously in English and Spanish. Classes start on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at 5:30pm. Look for more information coming home in the first week of January. We hope to provide childcare.
• Cafeteria food is an ongoing focus for the Health and Safety committee. Since the beginning of the year, the H&S committee has been trying to get small changes implemented into the menu to reflect a trend toward serving more wholesome foods. The January menu has included some of these small (but promising!) changes. If your child eats school lunch, please discuss the importance of trying new things and utilizing the salad bar.

Upcoming Events

• Candlelight Night is Monday, December 20, 2010 at 5:30pm. In addition to your food contribution, please bring your mess kit (reusable plates, utensils, cups) to minimize waste. Please join the school community for this free, fun, family evening.
• The holiday break starts Friday, December 24th and ends Monday, January 3.
• The next PA meeting is Tuesday, January 11th at 6PM.
Meeting adjourns at 10:40AM

Principal’s Report
· Thank you for everyone’s participation in family conferences. The administration is
continuing to work on ways to effectively communicate how your child is doing in
school. Bear with us as we find the most complete and effective ways to do so.
· You should have received a Compact agreement at your parent teacher conference.
The compact is to be signed and returned to school. It is a document that states what
expectations there are for students, teachers, and parents. The Compact, required by
the DOE, was developed by members of the SLT.
· Verification letters-if you are collecting federal assistance, and need the school to sign
off a letter stating that your child is a current student, please be advised that there are
now certain hours that the letters can be picked up. Please refer to the letter that was
sent home, or call the office.
· The next Coffee with Camille is tomorrow, November 18 at 8:40. The topic will be
homework. Camille is working with teachers to develop a consistent homework
policy across the grades that reflect our Progressive methodologies. She hopes to get
feedback from parents as well.
Presidents Report
Mad Hatters Ball
Mad Hatters was a huge success. Thanks to everyone. We raised $4400- $1,400 more than last
year. Parent agreed that the ticket system worked well. Wrist band was a great option too. The
flow of shifts was much better than last year. Lots of alum and current fifth graders helped.
Upcoming Events
· In today’s folder you will find an order form for our latest fundraiser. Each child has
made his/her own self portrait (with the help of Maggie!) and will be transferred on to
tee-shirts, aprons and tea towels. Put your order in-makes a great holiday gift.
· Skraputacular-the eco-friendly gift making event is on Saturday, December 4, 2010 in the
gym. Please sign up to bring a dish, or volunteer for a shift.
School Leadership Team (SLT)
· The SLT has been discussing technology. Camille is assessing all of our current
hard/software. It’s a huge job, so anyone with experience is encouraged to contact
Camille.
· The SLT has also been talking about reviving the Family directory. It had been a long
standing tradition to have one but we haven’t had one in three years. Class parent may be
able to help in getting info together for his/her class. Hoping we can just send home a slip
with required info. Ideas and help are welcome.
· The SLT has begun working on the Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP) for our
school.
6:48 PM Meeting adjourns. *This meeting was followed by a workshop about the Middle School
process led by Alli Mottola, former Guidance Counselor at Muscota.

Josh Liveright (K and 3rd grade)
Cathy Cabrera-Figueroa (K and 1st grade)
Margaret Peeler (2nd grade)
Introduction of Principal
Camille Wallin (Parent Association presented her with sweatshirt)
Camille is an Executive Principal appointed by the chancellor and she has a 3-year contract.
Camille spoke about her day:
First she had a meeting with Network Leaders, Muscota is in Children’s First Network. A
network is a support system for school and their administration. The leaders were taken to the
Metropolitan Museum to remind them of all the artifacts that are here in NYC and free to NYC
Public Schools. They spoke about the Core Standards that our children will learn and embrace
and being at the Met reminded them that they can be taught through the humanities.
Then she had a School Leadership Team (SLT) Meeting where she spoke about the state of the
school. The parents on the SLT represent the voice of the school so all parents will receive the
state of the school report at one of the upcoming PA meetings. Other things discussed during
SLT Meetings are needs assessment, what children need to learn in order to achieve and get
into middle school. The school budget was also discussed.
Title I Information
The applications that determine whether a school is entitled to Title I funds are the lunch forms
that all parents must fill out to see if their child is eligible for free or reduced school lunch. In
order to be a Title I school, a percentage of parents have to meet a certain income criteria.
Please look out for lunch forms in your child’s backpack in the coming weeks and return the
form promptly to Denise. Instructions for filing online will be included.
We did not qualify as a Title I School this year but we did receive ARRA (American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act) money that is earmarked to primarily save teachers’ jobs. Since this
money is federal money, Title I rules apply and parents get to decide what to do with 1% of it. In
order to spend the 1%, parents must vote to form a committee which we will do at a PA Meeting
in October. Parents will vote on whether to establish a
1. Parent Advisory Council (PAC), which has it’s own set of bylaws and rules. If
parents decide on this kind of committee then they must elect and vote for members
to serve on the PAC.
2. Subcommittee of the PA. The subcommittee would be made up of parent
volunteers.
First Day of School
For all new families look for parents wearing neon yellow t-shirts for help.
Kindergarteners and First Graders
Children and parents will enter through the main building and go straight to the classroom.
Parents are welcome in the classroom but first grade parents are not obligated to stay for the
full day.
Wednesday, September 7th and Monday, September 13th the Kindergarteners have a half-day,
from 8:30 AM until 11:30 AM.
Kindergarten parents should wait a week for bussing until Denise speaks to the drivers.
Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders
Enter through the Main gate and go straight to the cafeteria. Parents can drop off and then go.
Extended day should start on Monday, September 13th. (Correction: Extended day begins on
Monday, September 20th.)
Principal answered questions and discussed school drop-off and pick-up procedures, these can
be found in greater detail on the muscota.org website under
First day of school procedures and Muscota school procedures.
Principal stressed that 8:30 AM to 2:50 PM belongs to the child. Children are the #1 priority; the
#1 priority is the kids.
Parent asked Principal about possibility of hiring more bodies in the future. Will look at hiring
new staff but only time will tell.
Parent Volunteers are needed for
1. First Day of School
2. Family Breakfast
3. Data entry (Kari)
Voted Yes to
1. appointing Cathy Cabrera-Figueroa as corresponding secretary
2. adopting budget for 2010-2011 school year
Meeting Adjourned at 8:30 PM.

Margaret Peeler calls meeting to order at 6:40 p.m. and introduces Camille for the
Principal’s Report.
1. Principal’s Report
a) Progress Reports Progress reports went home today (10/6/10). The
progress report indicates whether or not a meeting with your child’s teacher is
needed. Please contact the teacher if you feel unsure of the assessment.
b) Parent volunteers. Parents are an integral part of the learning experience.
There will be a volunteer training on October 26 led by Camille and Margaret.
The training aims to ensure each parent has a clear job designation. Recess
and lunch is a real need on a daily basis. Volunteers are also needed as K
morning greeters and in the Library. Parent asks if a parent finds a day
where they suddenly have free time, could they be used? Yes, we could
utilize those parents. Inclement weather poses the most demand. It makes it
hard to do physical activity as it becomes a hazard, particularly if support staff
is out. Parent asks if criminal background check is required for parent
volunteers. Yes. When the Learning Leaders training is administered in the
school, a background check is done. Camille is currently trying to get
Learning Leaders in the school. There was a logistical issue that occurred
over the summer because of our lapse of leadership and LL fell through the
cracks.
c) School Report Card Now available to view online, we got a B. F in school
environment. We will improve on that. We got an F on performance.
Performance is based on student performance. 38% or our students met
math grade level. We need to do better. Kevin suggests discussing the CEP
at a Coffee with Camille. Kari explains the CEP is our Comprehensive
Educational Plan and we need to align our budget to it.
2. Mad Hatters Ball is October 30, 2010. It is our biggest fundraiser of the year
and we need lots of help from parents to make it a success. Volunteers are
needed for decorating, food, and games and activities. We need lots of food. Last
year, local restaurants donated. People can make a dish, or if you have any
connections with local businesses, please ask them for an in-kind donation.
Please sign up for a shift working a game or table. Decoration committee comes
in early, and transforms the gym and cafteria. Flyers will be going home soon.
Please post them around the neighborhood. Christine asks if there is a raffle.
Margaret says doesn’t currently have any item but feel free to come up with an
idea. Kari brings up the idea of having a shift master. There will be an organized
system put in place…promise! Even volunteers have to pay the general
admission price but no one will be turned away from the event. Ginnette
suggests giving fair warning to parents so they may budget ahead for the
evening.
3. Mad Hatters Parade (as described by parent and 4/5 teacher Kathy Guttierez) is
Friday, October 29. Traditionally, the principal picks up elders at top floor. All go
down to pick up K/1’s, parade around block while singing. Students return to the
gym for more singing and to hear the Mad Hatter (principal) read a story or
poem. Margaret urges parents to reach out to their teacher to ask how they can
help on that day. Parents are also needed to assist Denise in the morning.
4. Title 1 Vote: PA votes for a parent subcommittee to decide on Title I funds.
5. Motion to adopt minutes from 9/15/10 meeting. Minutes pass.
6. SLT Middle school admissions process was discussed. There was a meeting
tonight for 4/5′s on middle school choice. Admissions was also discussed. There
will be tours for prospective Muscota parents every Friday morning starting next
Friday,October 22 through early February.
7. Building Safety Council The first meeting was held between Amistad and
Muscota. The Safety Plan was the main purpose of the meeting. Camille is in
charge of drafting the document.
8. Parent questionnaire went out. Please send them back.
9. Take your Parent to Lunch Day has been postponed. The new date is
Wednesday, November 17 from 12:25-1:25pm. Parents pay five or six dollars
and eat with your child and their class in the cafeteria and accompany them at
recess
10.Class Parent Orientation is this Friday morning in the cafeteria. If you are
interested, let Margaret know.
11. Nutrition Workshop for Parents is happening at PS 278 and open to Muscota
Parents. The workshop takes place every Tuesday morning at PS 278 for eight
weeks. Ginnette mentions that it may be a good way to foster a relationship with
another school.
12.Training for the aides for Lunch and Recess is raised. This is the first year they
have had any type of direction. There is work to be done. Please document if
anything that doesn’t sit right, please document and forward a copy to the PA.
Courtney says her child reports that she is being yelled at. She is concerned that
her daughter will feel odd that she is ‘telling’ on an adult. Kevin suggests that
parents volunteer so that we can proactively correct the problem. Josh says if
there needs to be training for parents, there should be double training for the
aides.
Meeting Adjourns at 8:01 PM.
